What is Gerunds?



Gerunds are the adjective form of a verb which has a -ing ending. Examples include dancing, playing, eating. Right away this is confusing for students, as they are used to seeing that form as the continuous/progressive form of the verb ("she is eating", "they were dancing").

Gerund phrases will adhere to these rules. This will help you recognize the gerund word in the following sentence:

  • The phrase is always started with the word "gerund.
  • The gerund phrase could include a modifier, object, or both.
  • The entire phrase will work as an adjective.
  • The phrase will be in single agreement with the verb.
